Understand meta tags
What are meta tags and why they affect your traffic
Meta tags are invisible instructions in the page code that tell Google how to display your search result and social networks how to build the card when someone shares the link.
A well-written title increases click-through rate; an attractive Open Graph image generates more shares. AI models also read these tags to understand the topic and authority of the page.

Frequently asked questions
Meta tag questions
What are meta tags and why do they matter for SEO?
Meta tags are markup in the page head that describe your content to search engines and social networks. The title and meta description directly influence click-through rate in results, while Open Graph and Twitter Cards control how the link looks when shared.
What is the ideal length for the title and meta description?
Aim for about 50 to 60 characters in the title and 150 to 160 in the meta description. There is no official character limit — Google truncates by pixel width — but staying within these ranges avoids cut-off and auto-rewritten snippets in results.
What is Open Graph and why do I need it?
Open Graph is the protocol (og:title, og:description, og:image, og:url) that defines your link preview on Facebook, LinkedIn, WhatsApp and other platforms. Without it, networks guess and usually get it wrong. The recommended og:image is 1200 by 630 pixels.
What is the difference between Open Graph and Twitter Cards?
Twitter Cards use their own tags (twitter:card, twitter:title, twitter:image). When they are missing, X falls back to the Open Graph tags. Setting twitter:card to summary_large_image produces the large-image card, ideal for highlighting content.
Does the keywords meta tag still do anything?
Not for Google, which has ignored the keywords meta tag for many years. Focus your effort on title, meta description, canonical and structured data, which actually influence discovery, display and clicks.
Do meta tags help my page get cited by AI?
Yes, indirectly. Clear title and description plus consistent Open Graph help language models understand and summarize your page accurately. Combined with structured data, they increase the chance of your brand being cited in AI answers.
What is the difference between meta description and og:description?
Meta description appears in Google search results. og:description is used when the link is shared on social networks (LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter). Ideally both should be compatible, but they can take different approaches.
How long does it take Google to update the meta description?
It depends on when Google re-crawls the page — it can take days or weeks. To speed up, use Search Console to request indexing. The meta description only changes in results after Google processes the new page version.
